Every American student is taught that Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. That the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863 ended slavery in America. That Lincoln was the Great Emancipator. But the full story is more complicated than that — and more important. The Emancipation Proclamation applied only to Confederate states where Lincoln had no actual authority to enforce it. It specifically exempted the border states where slavery continued legally. In practice, it did not immediately free a single enslaved person. Lincoln himself wrote: 'If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it.' And in 1858 — five years before the Proclamation — Lincoln said on the record that he was not in favor of social or political equality between Black and white people. So what really happened? Who actually freed enslaved people? And what does the 13th Amendment — which ended slavery with a loophole still active today — actually say?
