Traditional Gender Roles vs. Today: Only 31% Of Black Americans Are Married. Are Gender Role Shifts Part Of The Story?

The conversation about traditional versus modern gender roles is everywhere right now -- on social media, in group chats, at cookouts, between couples. And nowhere is it more layered and more urgent than in the Black community.

In 1890, 80% of Black households were headed by two parents.

By 2024, only 31% of Black Americans are married -- the lowest rate of any racial group in America.

Black women are now the most educated demographic in the country. Nearly twice as many Black women graduate college as Black men each year. The manosphere is growing online.

The trad wife conversation is growing online. And meanwhile -- mass incarceration has removed 1.5 million Black men from the dating pool, the wealth gap keeps compounding, and social media has fundamentally changed how Black men and women see each other.

In this episode of Past Present Pushback, XO plays fluid devil's advocate -- pushing both sides -- while AZ and CDA bring the analysis and the real talk. No tips. Just truth.
